Summer Survival Tips For Runners
Has the summer heat slowed you down? Actually, one of the best pieces of advice we can give you is just that: slow down in hotter weather! It’s important to scale back your speed on long runs and increase your hydration. When you’re sweating profusely, your body becomes more and more depleted of essential electrolytes, which is why electrolyte drinks are so important during hot summer months as well.
Getting the right gear for summer running is just as important as hydration and scaling back on speed. We’ve curated a list of essential running gear for surviving summer miles just for you. We want to help you conquer the big three challenges summer running throws at you: sun exposure, heat, and humidity. When you’re wearing the right gear for hot weather running, you’ll not only be more comfortable and able to complete your workouts, but it’s also a matter of safety to prevent the dangers of heat stroke.
6 Essentials for Running in Summer
1. Lightweight, Breathable Running Shoes
A summer running schedule typically includes shorter distances at slower paces when compared to running through the fall, winter, and spring months. Running shoe models that are lightweight and breathable can help on these shorter runs, such as the On Cloud, the Hoka Mach, the Saucony Endorphin Speed, the Brooks Hyperion Max, the Mizuno Neo Vista, and the Altra Escalante.

2. Moisture-Wicking Apparel
In our store you’ll find a variety of tops, shorts, and tights in a variety of styles. Our moisture-wicking fabrics will help keep you cool and dry in the summer months.
3. Sun Protection Accessories
It’s important to apply sunscreen, but another important accessory is a running hat or visor. We’ve got a large assortment in multiple styles so that you can find a comfortable (and stylish!) hat or visor just for you. You will also need sunglasses such as Goodr or Pit Viper to protect your eyes with polarized lenses.
4. Hydration Tools
When running in the summer heat, it’s important to hydrate throughout the run. You can create a route where you will be able to access public water fountains, but it’s even better to carry the water you need with you. Nathan handheld water bottles and hydration packs are a great option.
5. Anti-Chafe and Products to Keep You Cool
With increased sweating comes an increased tendency to chafe. We carry body glide in store and it’s a product you’ll want handy this summer. Apply to any areas of chafing, including the feet. Apparel has been mentioned above, but it’s important to note that our wicking materials keep you cool! There’s nothing worse than sweaty, hot feet. Running socks like Feetures, Balega, OS1st, Injinji, and our own SPRC-branded socks are made with fabrics that allow sweat to evaporate, keeping your feet cooler and drier.
6. Visibility and Safety
A few things to remember when you’re thinking about safety and summer running. Know the signs of heat exhaustion which can lead to the more severe and dangerous condition called heat stroke. If you’re experiencing excessive sweating, dizziness, headache, nausea, and weakness, these could be signs of heat exhaustion. Stop your workout and get hydrated right away. Find shade, or better yet, go inside a cool place and rest until the symptoms pass. In order to stay safe out there during the Florida summer, you need to hydrate as much as possible before your workout, hydrate during the workout, and drink electrolyte drinks after your workout. For longer runs, consuming those electrolyte drinks before the workout is an option as well. Also, it’s a great idea to run with a group! That way if you’re feeling off, you have people around you who can help you.
